The Ruhraue Witten-Gedern nature reserve is located 3 km south of the town of Witten. There are no public roads through the nature reserve and you cannot enter the area. However, on the left bank of the Ruhr,, a footpath and cycle path runs in an elevated position along an old railway embankment, which forms a section of the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path. From this trail, (marked on the map) there are several good viewpoints to look into the area and observe the birds. To get there you can walk or cycle from Witten or park at the parking just north of the area on the Uferstraße.
