The developement of Rickelsbüller Koog Nature Reserve started in 1981 when the former salt marshes were artificially disconnected from the North Sea. The current wetland meadows with low vegetation are breeding sites for Archibebe Común , Aguja Colinegra , Combatiente , Gaviota argéntea europea , Barnacla Cariblanca and Avoceta Común.
From autumn to early spring, the dyked area and the adjacent salt marshes on the dyke's sea-ward side are resting sites of Barnacla Cariblanca , Barnacla Carinegra , Correlimos Gordo , Correlimos Común Zarapito Real and Silbón Europeo . Observation possibilities depend on the tides of the North Sea.
