The Ilkerbruch consists of larger water areas with shallow water areas and reed beds, wet grasslands and alder forests. The wetland is a bird resting place during migration. Among others Agachadiza común, Pigargo Europeo, Cuco Común, Cigüeña Blanca, Milano Real and duck species such as Cerceta Carretona and birds like Grulla Común occur.

An approximately six-kilometre-long nature trail leads around the Ilkerbruch nature reserve. There are stations with information boards. Visitors can observe waterfowl on several observation platforms and from a 12 m high observation tower. The bird observation platforms and hides can be accessed by walking and cycling.
