They include Grulla Común, Águila Pescadora, Cormorán Grande and Andarríos Chico, who use the lake as a stepping stone on their way to wintering or breeding grounds. A 6 km hike around the Heerter See nature reserve and European bird sanctuary is a special experience for nature lovers. Its salty water provides habitat for special plant species and its shallow shores are ideal for waders.
