In the early 2000s some Greater Rhea escaped from a farm in the area. Since then they have survived and even thrived with reportedly up to 500 birds living in the fields and woodland around the nature reserve of Kammerbruch and the village of Utecht. Exploring the area often yields views of these flightless birds. Other birds you can encounter are Garza Real, Grulla Común, Aguilucho Lagunero Occidental, Busardo ratonero, Gaviota Cana and Cuervo Grande.
