After gravel mining ended in Freudenthal, the lakes became an important refuge for water birds. The area, which is now protected, offers suitable resting opportunities for many migratory birds and breeding opportunities for water-bound species in particular. The area is characterized by large groups of Cormorán Grande, Focha Común and Porrón Europeo, but rarities such as Cormorán Pigmeo, Pagaza Piquirroja and Cisne Cantor have also been observed.
