Especially during spring and autumn migration the Elbe river serves as a resting place for a lot of water birds. The Fähranleger Glücksstadt is a ferry terminal that reaches out into the river a bit. This creates a protected area for the birds, with many gathering around it. Among the birds you can encounter are Ostrero Euroasiático, Gaviota Cana, Silbón Europeo, Barnacla Cariblanca, Gaviota argéntea europea and Gaviota sombría.
