The forest of the Dreiborner Hochfläche was not cultivated in the almost 60 years in which the area was a military training area and has largely reached a jungle-like condition due to no longer cleared old and dead wood. The national park administration has set itself the goal of preserving this natural forest as a habitat for partially rare animal species such as the European wildcat and establishing specially protected rest areas around breeding colonies for Cormorán Grande, Garza Real and Cigüeña Negra. The open highlands area is perfect to see openland birds like Alondra Común, Bisbita Pratense, Tarabilla común, Alcaudón Dorsirrojo or Cuco Común.
