Bensheimer Tongruben is an area of former clay pits that have been filled with groundwater since 1960, creating a unique habitat with wet forest, shallow water areas, reeds and wet meadows. The nature reserve covers an area of approximately 92 hectares and is part of the Natura 2000 network.
The area is a resting place for numerous migratory birds on their way to their winter quarters. And many local bird species also live in this area and raise their young here. Birds you can observe include Martín Pescador Común, Agachadiza común, Rascón Europeo, Oropéndola Europea, Cuco Común, Halcón Peregrino, Ánsar común, Barnacla canadiense grande, Ganso del Nilo, Escribano Palustre and Curruca Capirotada.
