A large nature reserve and adjacent cemetery close to the heart of Denmark's capital city, easily accessed by public transport and bike.
Utterslev Mose & Bispebjerg Kirkegård are easy accessible from central København (Copenhagen). The site consists of open shallow lakes with extensive reedbeds, surrounded by a mix of mown grass, shrubs, and woods. The Mose is divided by roads into 3 sections, Østmosen in the east, Midtmosen in the middle, and Vestmosen in the west. The lakes hold a large colony of Ánsar común, which are habituated to people so are very approachable. Most freshwater ducks occur in varying numbers, as do Somormujo Lavanco and occasionally Zampullín Cuellinegro and more rarely, Somormujo Cuellirrojo. Avetoro Común are often present in winter, and could breed.
On migration, Águila Pescadora, Aguilucho Lagunero Occidental and Abejero Europeo often pass over along with numerous Busardo ratonero. Rarer species like Milano Negro can occur. Wader migration in early autumn includes regular Andarríos Chico, Andarríos Grande and Andarríos Bastardo; after drought summers, more mud is exposed, which can attract Correlimos Común, Combatiente, and Correlimos Zarapitín.
The reedbeds hold large numbers of Carricero Común and occasional Bigotudo, while in adjacent wet ground with tall herbs, Carricero Políglota are frequent. The denser shrubby areas hold breeding Ruiseñor Ruso and Zarcero Icterino, as well as commoner species like Mosquitero Musical, Mosquitero Común, Curruca Zarcerilla, Curruca Capirotada and Curruca Mosquitera. Pájaro-moscón Europeo can be seen occasionally, and has bred in the past. In winter, these are replaced by flocks of Zorzal Alirrojo and Zorzal Real. A headland on the north side of Midtmosen, Langholm, has some excellent rough scrub habitat, which at least used to hold breeding Alcaudón Dorsirrojo. More open grassy areas can attract passage birds like Tarabilla Norteña.
Bispebjerg Kirkegård (Bispebjerg Cemetery) has extensive tree cover, and is quiet with minimal disturbance, making it good for woodland birds, including Picogordo Común and passage Colirrojo Real and Papamoscas Cerrojillo. Grundtvigs Kirke, the landmark church adjacent to the Kirkegård, has breeding Cernícalo vulgar and occasional passage Colirrojo Tizón.
An extensive network of cycle paths makes cycle access very easy. Bus stops on Frederiksborgvej (by the Kirkegård and the east end of Østmosen), on Horsebakken (between Østmosen and Midtmosen), and on Åkandevej at the west end; consult bus stop information boards for service numbers and timetables. Car parking is limited, but not necessary, with København's excellent public transport. Note that while Utterslev Mose is open at all hours, Bispebjerg Kirkegård is closed at night (opens 07:00, closes 22:00 in summer, 19:00 in winter).
