Hotel Bougainvillea is just a 20-minute drive from San José's international airport and a nice place to start a birding trip in Costa Rica. The main attraction of the hotel are the 10 acres of botanical gardens. The great variety of tropical plants, including heliconias, bromeliads, orchids, shrubs and some old big trees attracts loads of birds. The garden also has ponds and a bird viewing platform. Guaranteeing a great first morning or evening of birding.
You can observe hummingbirds, tanagers, woodpeckers, flycatchers, owls and many other species of birds. A Mottled Owl can often be found in the bamboo bush next to the swimming pool. Other birds that are often seen in the gardens include Boat-billed Flycatcher, Blue-grey Tanager, Rufous-tailed Hummingbird, Canivet's Emerald, Green-breasted Mango, Steely-vented Hummingbird, Hoffmann's Woodpecker, Lineated Woodpecker, Lesson's Motmot, Red-billed Pigeon, Social Flycatcher, Melodious Blackbird, Squirrel Cuckoo, Grey-headed Chachalaca, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Crimson-fronted Parakeet and Summer Tanager.
