The area provides good mixture of habitats, including coastal lake with extensive reed-beds, sandy beach and dunes, arable lands and stony steppe grasslands, small forested and bushy areas and villages. In summer time it is an easy place to observe Carricero Agrícola, Canastera Común, Garza Imperial and number of waterfowl species, including Porrón Pardo. Good variety of bird species can be seen during the migration period, including Morito Común, Espátula Común, the three species of 'marsh' terns, and other. The lake is one of the main wintering areas of Barnacla cuelliroja, big number of other waterfowl, including Ánsar chico and other. Durankulak Lake is the best place in Bulgaria, where there is some chance in winter time to see Avutarda Euroasiática and Sisón Común.

Accesso
From Durankulak village drive North and 300 m after the village turn East toward the Camping Kosmos on the beach (3 km from Durankulak). You can park there and walk along the beach and the lake. The Barnacla cuelliroja can be observed from the roads around Durankulak, depending the specific flight corridor between the roosting site in the lake and the arable fields around.

There is a watch platform established by the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds - BirdLife Bulgaria, but it is closed to prevent its use by poachers. Nevertheless, from its staircase it is possible to observe the take-off of the geese or the birds in the lake.
