Due to the variation of pine and deciduous forests, extensive grasslands, thorny bushes, heathland and the sandy underground the natura-2000 reserve Heidebos contains some of the most regional unique species. The most elusive by far is the Chotacabras Europeo, which you can hear in the area on the right moments of the year. In the pine and deciduous forests you can find almost all bird species related to forests in Flanders like Herrerillo Capuchino , Papamoscas Cerrojillo, Carbonero Garrapinos, Trepador Azul, Reyezuelo Sencillo, Picamaderos Negro, Cárabo Común , Chocha Perdiz. Some of the most remarkable predatory birds also breed in this nature reserve, like Azor Común and Abejero Europeo. In the more semi-open parts like the heathlands you can find Alondra Totovía , Colirrojo Real and Papamoscas Gris.
