The Kleine Weikerlsee and the Große Weikerlsee are located in the Traun-Donau-Auen nature reserve, on the confluence of the rivers Donau and Traun. Along the banks of the lakes you will find birds typical of the region such as Cisne Vulgar, Zampullín Común, Ánsar común and Somormujo Lavanco. The area is especially good in winter for overwintering ducks such as Pato Colorado, Porrón Europeo, Porrón Moñudo, Porrón Pardo, Porrón Osculado and Serreta Grande, but also Cormorán Pigmeo, Rascón Europeo and Garceta Grande can be observed.
Because the lakes are surrounded by forest you can also find many woodpeckers and other woodland birds. In the summer, when the area attracts many holidaymakers, far fewer birds can be seen.
