Descripción

Surrounded by the Barron River, Redden Creek and the Coral Sea, Redden Island contains a high diversity of habitats in a relatively small area and attracts a large number of bird species. It is a protected reserve which is surrounded by a fence. There are gates that give entry. Most of the reserve is fairly open with areas of littoral rainforest, bushland, paperbark woodland, mangroves and a beach.

Interesting birds found here include Lovely Fairywren, Shining Flycatcher, Torresian Kingfisher and Noisy Pitta. Further out towards the eastern end of the island is a large wader roost on a sandbar at the mouth of the Barron River. Various wader and tern species can be found here when the sandbar is exposed including species not typically found on the Esplanade including Ruddy Turnstone, Sanderling and occasionally Double-banded Plover. Waders are best viewed on an incoming tide (see a link to the tides table below) Check the edges of the mangroves of the Barron River itself for Beach Stone Curlew and Great-billed Heron.

Migrants (Sept-April) include Pied Imperial Pigeon, Oriental Cuckoo, Dollarbird and most waders.
