Mount Hypipamee National Park

Tablelands Regional Council, Queensland  >  Australia

A beautiful piece of high altitude forest with waterfalls and an extinct volcanic vent. Good place for endemics and occasionally Southern Cassowary.

Descripción

Mount Hypipamee National Park has a short trail of approx 400m that takes you to the crater itself. Look out for Australian King-Parrot, Atherton Scrubwren, Gray-headed Robin in and around the carpark. You can walk along the trail and listen out for more forest birds such as Eastern Whipbird and Golden Whistler. You'll no doubt enounter an Australian Brushturkey as you wander along.

As you approach the crater you get more views of the sky and forest edge meaning a chance for raptors. A pair of Peregrine Falcon have nested in the area. As you continue round and get back to the carpark the roadway can produce good birds including Victoria's Riflebird and occasionally Golden Bowerbird.

Accesso

Access to Mount Hypipamee National Park is via sealed road. Departing south on route 1 from Atherton its about 25min drive. Follow the signs as you approach and its a turning on the right. There is plenty of parking and toilets in the carpark as well as covered picnic area. Don't leave food out and take all rubbish with you as this is a National Park.

The trails themselves are uneven past the crater and down to the waterfall. The first section is paved, however it can still be lumpy from roots breaking the surface so take care especially when wet. Always worth checking National Parks website (link below) to check access before heading out.
