Imperial County, California  >  United States

This seawall is one of the only remaining places to get close to the water at the Salton Sea and view birds at close range.

Description

While the Young Rd seawall generally has more birds than Lack & Grubel, the latter is much closer to the receding Salton Sea shoreline and as such usually gives better photography opportunities and a chance to see birds at closer range. As with other Salton Sea locations, birding is great here year-round. In late summer, this is a good place to look for the regional specialty Yellow-footed Gull.

Access

Park at the corner of Lack & Grubel. Unless it has rained recently (which is quite rare in the Imperial valley), the road is driveable in any vehicle. A scope would be useful for scanning the sea, but the shoreline is still quite close here as of 2024.
