This lake is an easy place to see a diversity of upland and waterbirds, especially in Fall and Winter.
The gentle, paved path around the Lafayette Reservoir is busy with walkers, but it doesn't seem to interfere with bird watching. The lake is a magnet for waterfowl in the Fall and Winter, including as many as 23 species of waterfowl. Osprey, Bald Eagle, American White Pelican, and California Thrasher are all regularly seen here.
Lafayette Reservoir is located in Contra Costa County, west of Lafayette. A parking lot at the top of the dam's spillway has hourly or full-day parking. Click on the P in the map for directions to the parking. With a full-day pass, you can also park further into the property, which is owned and operated by the water district. You can make a 3 miles circular walk around the reservoir.
