Local wetland nature reserve formed from former sand quarries, now flooded.
Messingham Sand Quarries has a tick list of 180 bird species. Two hides available. Reedbeds provide nest sites for Καλαμοποταμίδα, Σχοινοποταμίδα, (Ευρωπαϊκό) Ψευταηδόνι and (Μεγάλο) Καλαμοτσίχλονο. (Ευρασιατικός) Ήταυρος is a regular visitor. Winter wildfowl such as (Ευρωπαϊκό) Σφυριχτάρι, (Ευρασιατική) Χουλιαρόπαπια, Γκισάρι, (Ευρωπαϊκό) Κιρκίρι and Καπακλής. In 2001 Green Heron showed up here.
Just south of Scunthorpe and the M180 motorway. Click on the P in the map to get directions. Exit the reserve with care as its a fast straight road. The circular walking route indicated on the map is about 3 km long.
