Shell bank of cockle and oyster shells which surrounds an extensive saltmarsh, home to thousands of wintering birds.
The Bradwell Shell Bank is a nature reserve of 12 hectares. A visit at high tide (see link to tides table below) in autumn and winter will reward you with views of up to 20,000 waders roosting and creating murmurations in the sky. This saltmarsh is a habitat for a wide variety of birds, from Κιτρινοσουσουράδα to (Κοινή) Σιταρήθρα. During the summer months waders such as (Ευρωπαϊκός) Στρειδοφάγος and Αμμοσφυριχτής will breed along the shellbanks, so please keep to the seawall to avoid disturbance and watch them raise their young from afar.
The mud and sandflats to the east are part of the Dengie National Nature Reserve, an internationally important site for overwintering waders especially Αργυροπούλι, Κοκκινοσκαλίδρα and Θαλασσολιμόζα. Winter often brings Χειμωνόκιρκος and Βαλτόμπουφος.
Bradwell Shell Bank Nature Reserve is located on East End Road, Bradwell on Sea. The area has a free parking. Click on the P in the map to get directions. No access onto the saltmarsh, please keep to the footpath along the seawall.
