Description
At Sandarviken 223 bird species have been recorded. 35 species of wading birds have been recorded.
Sandarviken holds thousands of wintering Σταχτόπαπια but Βελουδόπαπια, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Μαυρόπαπια, (Κοινή) Πουπουλόπαπια and diving ducks also winter in smaller numbers. Other waterfowl like (Ευρωπαϊκό) Σφυριχτάρι, (Ευρασιατική) Χουλιαρόπαπια (Ευρωπαϊκό) Κιρκίρι, Βαρβάρα and Καπακλής also winter in the area. Sandarviken holds wintering Σκουφοβουτηχτάρι, Κοκκινοβουτηχτάρι, and Χειμωνοβουτηχτάρι.Barnacle Goose also winter as do a few wading birds in winter. Κουφομπεκάτσινο is sometimes found. Wintering birds of prey are often found in the area. Some of the common ones are Χειμωνόκιρκος, (Κοινή) Γερακίνα, (Ευρωπαϊκός) Θαλασσαετός, and Χρυσαετός.
During migration period the bay often holds large amounts of waders. Most numerous is the Λασποσκαλίδρα which sometimes number in the thousands. (Ευρωπαϊκή) Λιμόζα, (Κοινό) Μπεκατσίνι, (Ευρωπαϊκός) Στρειδοφάγος, (Ευρασιατική) Τουρλίδα, Κοκκινοσκέλης, Λασποσκαλίδρα, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Αβοκέτα, and Αμμοσφυριχτής all breed somewhat regularly. Other wading birds often found are:Χαλικοκυλιστής, Αργυροπούλι, Θαλασσολιμόζα, Λευκοσκαλίδρα, Σταχτιά Νανοσκαλίδρα, and (Κοινή) Νανοσκαλίδρα. Rarer wading birds like Ραβδοσκαλίδρα, Ερυθρόλαιμος Φαλαρόποδας, Κουφομπεκάτσινο and Διπλομπεκάτσινο are sometimes found. Many vagrant wading birds have also been found.
In the lagoon Καπακλής, (Ευρασιατική) Χουλιαρόπαπια, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Σαρσέλα and many other dabbling ducks often Feed. Κηλιδοβούτι and Λαμπροβούτι often rest at Sandarviken year round. Large amounts of geese use the coastal meadows as resting and feeding ground during their migration. Barnacle Goose and Σταχτόχηνα can sometimes be found in the thousands. Pink-footed Goose and Κοκκινόχηνα has been seen.

The southern areas of Sandarviken is a bird protection area from 15 march - 30 june and from 1 Oktober - 15 november.
