Örtofta consists of a range of shallow ponds where water is collected from the nearby sugar mill.
It's not more than fair to start with the downside of Örtofta, the smell. The efflux from the sugar mill is sometimes quite odorus. The banks around the ponds are also very muddy a lot of the time. But if one can live with that the site is nice and gives good views of the birds.
Örtofta is a inland site that consists of a number of ponds. Were to watch birds is determined by the levels of water in them. In the surrounding bushes and landscape other birds than those attracted by the ponds can be seen, fex Πετρίτης , Δεντρογέρακο and Θαμνοτριλιστής.
The nutritious water in the ponds draw a variety of shorebirds, especially tringa waders but also calidri fex Σταχτιά Νανοσκαλίδρα , Ραβδοσκαλίδρα but also Μαχητής. But even more rare visitors have been seen, fex Θωρακωτή Σκαλίδρα, Μεγάλος Λιμνόδρομος and Sharp-tailed Sandpiper. Except waders the site sometimes offers Μαυροβουτηχτάρι.
When crossing the stream, just after the parking, it is worth to look for (Ευρωπαϊκή) Αλκυόνη.
If going by public transport take the train to Örtofta station and walk.
If going by car, drive to Örtofta station, take Centralgatan, turn left on Löddeåvägen and finally in to Brovägen and park by the stream.
Note: The area is an active work site, they don't mind birdwatchers but make space for the machines and personel.
