Description
La Higuerilla is a great spot to look for birds of prey. In 2024 I found 3 different Μαυρόγυπας nests in the oaks on the other side of the river, although some diligent scanning is required to find them. Also easily seen in spring and summer are Τσίφτης, Φιδαετός and Γερακαετός.
Be sure to check the riverbanks for fishing Μαύρος Πελαργός. On- and around the river Σταχτοτσικνιάς, (Κοινός) Λευκοτσικνιάς and (Ευρωπαϊκός) Κορμοράνος are present most of the time, as well as Πορφυροτσικνιάς sometimes. Pay attention to the calls of Κοκκινοπέρδικα, which often can be found in the scrubland or even crossing the road.

Access
La Higuerilla is easily reached from Villareal de San Carlos. It is the third viewpoint (on the left side of the road) after passing the Torrejon-Tietar dam. You can park next to the viewpoint. Press P on the map for directions.
