One of the biggest forests of Belgrade. It connects Veliki Mokri Lug, Avala and Kaludjerica.
Stepin Gaj is a forested area located in the southern part of Belgrade. Dirt paths go through the forest, which makes a route you can hike and watch birds on, while admiring nature around you. There are stunning views of the surrounding hills and forests. It is a rarely visited area, because of the lack of attention from birders, and the size and relative untidiness of the forest, unlike Topčider Park, Zvezdara Forest, and Košutnjak forest.
There are many species of forest birds that you can see here, like Μαύρος Δρυοκολάπτης, Χουχουριστής, Καμποδεντροβάτης, Βουνοδεντροβάτης, Πράσινος Δρυοκολάπτης, Νανοδρυοκολάπτης and Δεντροτσοπανάκος. There are other common species, such as Χρυσοβασιλίσκος, Πυροβασιλίσκος, Πευκοδρυοκολάπτης, Γαλαζοπαπαδίτσα, (Κοινό) Λούγαρο, (Κοινός) Σπίνος and (Ευρωπαϊκός) Κοκκοθραύστης. There is likely a (Ευρασιατική) Μπεκάτσα population, but it isn't yet confirmed. Though there are multiple reports of the bird.
Bus lines 312, 308, 33, and 38 can all take you very close to the forest. 312 Can take you straight to the entrance, but 308, 33, and 38 bus lines all have bus stops close to the forest entrance, that is if you approach from the north. E-75 Highway passes through the forest. Click on the P in the map for directions to a parking.
Many unmarked paths and trails are going all through the forest, so be careful that you don't get lost if you don't know the area well. Also, there are not many people at all, so it is best to go with other people if you plan on going deep in the forest.
