The area of Sítio do Pinheiro - Luz de Tavira consists of pine trees, salt marshes, agricultural areas, old salt pans and a temporary pond. It is possible to take a tour inside the salt flats. The salt pans in the Ria Formosa produce half of Portugal's sea salt. The salt is 'harvested' 3 or 4 times in the summer. The salt pans were constructed at the expense of part of the wetlands, but fortunately they still form an excellent new habitat for birds. For example, you have a good chance of seeing groups of (Ευρωπαϊκό) Φοινικόπτερο.
