Description
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Ασημόγλαρος της Μεσογείου, Μελανόγλαρος and Καστανοκέφαλος Γλάρος. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like Σιγλίγουρος, Χαλικοκυλιστής, Λευκοσκαλίδρα and Ακτίτης.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly Ποταμογλάρονο and Roseate Tern, but sometimes also Χειμωνογλάρονο.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Αρτέμης can be observed. Small numbers of Bulwer's Petrel can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like Μύχος and Barolo Shearwater.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like Ring-billed Gull, Ισλανδόγλαρος and, in 2011, a Yellow-crowned Night Heron.
