Further inland of the Mira estuary, in the area of Moinho da Asneira, you can find areas of marshland and old salt pans, now converted into fish farms, where observation of herons and cormorants is relatively easy. In winter this is a common feeding place for Ψαραετός. During low tide, the mudflats on the river banks are used by different species of waders. Among the birds you can encounter are Σταχτοτσικνιάς, (Ευρωπαϊκός) Κορμοράνος, Κοκκινοσκέλης, Πρασινοσκέλης, Ακτίτης, Λασποσκαλίδρα and Σιγλίγουρος.

From Lisbon, take the A2 to Grândola Sul. Take the IC 33/N120 towards Sul Algarve, St. André and Sines. At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit and continue on the N120-4. At the next roundabout, take the 3rd exit, road N120-1, towards Algarve. Turn right towards CM1072 (signs for Porto Covo/Vila Nova de Milfontes/Ilha do Pessegueiro) and, at the roundabout, take the exit for Vila Nova de Milfontes. Take the EN390 towards Vila Nova de Milfontes, pass through Bunheiras and follow the signs for São Luís. At the roundabout, take the EM532, towards Galeado. At the second café, turn right on a dirt road. Go down and, on the right, is the tourist resort Moinho da Asneira.
From Faro, until the end of the A22 towards Sagres and, at the roundabout, turn towards Aljezur, on the EN120. Pass through Aljezur, Odeceixe, São Teotónio and Boavista dos Pinheiros, until the roundabout at Portas do Transval, where you turn left towards Vila Nova de Milfontes. Pass the Rio Mira bridge. At the roundabout, go straight ahead on the EN 390 and, at the next roundabout, turn right, then follow the EM532 until Galeado. At the second café, turn right on a dirt road. Go down and, on the right, is the tourist resort Moinho da Asneira.

Partida de Faro: De Faro, até ao final da A22 em direção a Sagres e, na rotunda, virar no sentido de Aljezur, pela EN120. Passar por Aljezur, Odeceixe, São Teotónio e Boavista dos Pinheiros, até à rotunda nas Portas do Transval, onde se vira à esquerda em direção a Vila Nova de Milfontes. Passar a ponte Rio Mira. Na rotunda seguir em frente pela EN 390 e, na rotunda seguinte, virar à direita, seguindo depois pela EM532 até ao Galeado. Ao segundo café virar à direita numa estrada de terra batida. Descer e, à direita, encontra-se o empreendimento turístico Moinho da Asneira.

The Mira estuary makes it possible to explore different types of habitats, from the dune cords of Praia das Furnas, on the south bank of the river mouth, to areas of marshland passing through open waters in front of Vila Nova de Milfontes, and areas of forest and scrubland on the south bank of this estuary.
