Description

Kea are always hanging around the two Cafés in the centre of Arthur's Pass village, trying to steal your pie. So you can get really close up views of these beautiful mountain parrots.

Exploring the tracks around, such as the short Devils Punchbowl Falls Walking track, you don't only get beautiful beech forest and scenery, but probably also spot Rifleman, New Zealand Bellbird, South Island Robin, Tomtit, and Pipipi (Brown Creeper).

If you stay overnight, you get the chance to hear Morepork and even the rare Great Spotted Kiwi.

Access

Arthur’s Pass is right on State Highway 73 between Christchurch and the West Coast. The TranzAlpine passenger railway stops at Arthur's Pass as well.

Several walks start directly from the village, including the Devils Punchbowl Walking track (just 2km), Avalanche Peak, and Dobson Nature Walk, all offering further birding opportunities (e.g. for New Zealand Rock Wren). The Arthur's Pass National Park Visitor Centre provides up-to-date trail info. Accommodation, including a campsite, is available in the village, making it a good base for exploring the region.
