The central breakwaters on the North Sea beach of Vlieland are a gathering place for birds and often good for photographing birds.
Gulls, ducks, geese and waders use the Strekdammen (breakwaters) on the North Sea beach to rest or forage. And don't forget to scan the North Sea itself. Birds you will most often see on the breakwaters are (Κοινή) Πουπουλόπαπια, Δαχτυλιδόχηνα, Ασημόγλαρος του Βορά, Μελανόγλαρος, Χαλικοκυλιστής, Λευκοσκαλίδρα and (Ευρωπαϊκός) Στρειδοφάγος. Also a chance of Βραχοσκαλίδρα and Γιγαντόγλαρος. At or above the sea, depending on the wind direction and the time of year, you can see birds such as (Ευρωπαϊκή) Μαυρόπαπια, (Ευρωπαϊκός) Κορμοράνος, Common Guillemot, Σούλα (του Βορά), Χειμωνογλάρονο, (Ευρωπαϊκό) Νανογλάρονο and Κηλιδοβούτι.

Vlieland can be reached by ferry from Harlingen. Several boats leave per day and the crossing takes about an hour and a half (see link for ferry tickets below). On the island itself it is best to rent a bike. If you cycle from the Lange Paal camping site towards the dunes on the cycle path parallel to the sea, you will come across various dune paths that lead to the sea. The entire area around the red dot on the map has breakwaters and if you walk to the sea in that area, you're always in the right place.

Hotelletje de Veerman is a household name among Dutch birdwatchers. The hotel is ideally and wonderfully quietly located on the edge of the village of Oost-Vlieland and on the Wadden Sea. At low tide birds are foraging right in front of the hotel. The hotel also borders the Westerse Veld. These meadows and grasslands on the Wadden Sea are a magnet for birds. Rarities and vagrants are regularly seen here. From the hotel you can walk there within a minute. The hotel's breakfast is famous. It is not only very tasty, but bird watchers have also been thought of. At breakfast you get a bag to take lunch with you. This way you can enjoy lunch on a bench in nature during the walks and optimally enjoy the birds and the Vlieland landscape.
