Description
The Posthuiswad is a large tidal flat that lies outside the dike next to the Kroon’s polders. A phenomenal place to watch birds. If you can experience the enormous wealth of the Wadden Sea somewhere on Vlieland, it is here. With a bit of luck you see huge groups of waders. The birds can sometimes be a bit further away, so this is really an ideal place to have a spotting scope at hand. Among the countless birds that you can see here are Θαλασσολιμόζα, Αργυροπούλι, Δρεπανοσκαλίδρα, Βαρβάρα, (Ευρασιατική) Χουλιαρομύτα, Λασποσκαλίδρα, (Κοινή) Νανοσκαλίδρα, (Ευρασιατική) Τουρλίδα, (Ευρωπαϊκός) Στρειδοφάγος, Αμμοσφυριχτής and Κοκκινοσκαλίδρα.
The birds live here at the rhythm of the tide. At low tide they forage on the mudflats. If the water is at the lowest, the birds can be very far away. That is why rising tide is often the best time to watch birds at the Posthuiswad. The birds are then driven closer and closer to the coast by the rising water. See the link to the tidal table below.

Nederlands: Het Posthuiswad is een grote wadplaat die buitendijks ligt naast de Kroon’s Polders. Een fenomenale plek om wadvogels te kijken. Als je ergens de enorme rijkdom aan wadvogels kunt ervaren op Vlieland is het hier wel. Met een beetje geluk zie je enorme groepen steltlopers op het wad scharrelen of groepsvluchten maken. De vogels kunnen soms wel wat verder weg zitten, dus dit is echt een ideale plek om een telescoop bij de hand te hebben. Een greep uit de talloze vogels die je hier kunt zien zijn Θαλασσολιμόζα, Αργυροπούλι, Δρεπανοσκαλίδρα, Βαρβάρα, (Ευρασιατική) Χουλιαρομύτα, Λασποσκαλίδρα, (Κοινή) Νανοσκαλίδρα, (Ευρασιατική) Τουρλίδα, (Ευρωπαϊκός) Στρειδοφάγος, Αμμοσφυριχτής en Κοκκινοσκαλίδρα.
De vogels leven hier op het ritme van het getij. Bij laag water gaan ze het wad op. Als het water op z'n laagst staat kunnen de vogels wel heel ver weg zitten. Daarom is opkomend tij vaak de beste tijd om vogels te kijken bij het Posthuiswad. De vogels worden dan steeds dichter naar de kust toe gedreven door het stijgende water. Access
Vlieland can be reached by ferry from Harlingen. Several boats leave per day and the crossing takes about an hour and a half (see link for ferry tickets below). The Posthuiswad is located on the west side of Vlieland. On Vlieland, no cars are allowed, so you have to get here by bike or island bus. The bus brings you right to restaurant Posthuys that is right in front of the Posthuiswad. From there it is easy to explore the coastline on foot. In the morning you have backlight, so an afternoon visit is ideal. The best views are from the path that runs on the western side of the area (see the vantage point symbols on the map).

Nederlands: Het Posthuiswad ligt aan de westkant van Vlieland. Op Vlieland zijn geen auto's toegestaan, dus je moet met de fiets of eilandbus naar deze westpunt van het eiland komen. De bus brengt je tot bij restaurant Posthuys dat recht voor het Posthuiswad ligt. Vanaf daar kun je het gebied gemakkelijk te voet verkennen. In de ochtend heb je tegenlicht, dus ideaal is een bezoek in de middag. Beste uitzichten heb je vanaf het pad dat aan de westkant van het gebied loopt (zie de uitkijkpunt symbolen op de kaart).
