Description
The area around Malta International Airport is at its best in spring, particularly with north-west winds. On good days there can be good numbers of harriers, mostly Καλαμόκιρκος but also Στεπόκιρκος (early-mid spring) and Λιβαδόκιρκος (mid-late spring). The site can also be good for (Ευρωπαϊκό) Κιρκινέζι and (Ευρωπαϊκό) Μαυροκιρκίνεζο (late spring). In practice any migrating species can be seen from the area since it is open, such as flocks of herons, waders, (Ευρωπαϊκός) Μελισσοφάγος and (Ευρωπαϊκή) Χαλκοκουρούνα. Μικρογαλιάντρα arrive in spring and remain to breed in small numbers. Other passerines include hirundines, including Δενδροχελίδονο, and pipits, including Κοκκινοκελάδα. In late autumn, the site is also one of the best places in Malta to see (Ευρωπαϊκό) Βροχοπούλι and (Ευρωπαϊκή) Καλημάνα. Several rarities have been seen here over the years.
