Description
The forests of slopes in Gauja National Park with old deciduous trees attract less common species of woodpeckers (Λευκονώτης Δρυοκολάπτης, Τριδάχτυλος Δρυοκολάπτης, Μαύρος Δρυοκολάπτης and Μεσαίος Δρυοκολάπτης). Relatively often spotted are the elsewhere rare Πρασινοφυλλοσκόπος, Νανομυγοχάφτης and locally common Δασόκοτα. Ural Owl has started nesting in the park, and the smallest owl of Latvia — Σπουργιτόγλαυκα — is also seen more often. Many Ορτυκομάνα and some species of warblers, which are not common in Western Europe (Ποταμοτριλιστής, Blyth's Reed Warbler), are found in the riverside meadows of Gauja.
