Description

Seasonal wet meadow acting as a high tide roost for many species that are normally on the coast. In winter this unique location down a quiet lane looks at first glance just like a flooded field but at high tide the location and surrounding fields can be home to a wide variety of shorebirds and waterfowl like Δαχτυλιδόχηνα sometimes in the hundreds, Σταχτοτσικνιάς, Κοκκινοσκέλης, (Ευρασιατική) Τουρλίδα and (Κοινός) Λευκοτσικνιάς.

If winter forage has been planted the fields surrounding the area can also produce (Κοινό) Φανέτο, Κοκκινότσιχλα, Κεδρότσιχλα and (Κοινός) Σπίνος in good numbers. It has been the place to see (Ευρασιατική) Χαλκόκοτα on occasion when they pass through the island.

Access

Its a narrow 2 lane public road. In winter viewing is recommended from a vehicle as your car acts like a bird hide giving opportunity to observe without disturbing the birds. If on foot please keep hidden by hedging and fencing as best as you can and do not enter any of the fields as they are all privately owned and it will disturb the birds.

If driving the best access is by driving east along the St Clements Coast Rd (La Grande Route des Sablons A4) past La Rocque Harbour (another site listed on Birdingplaces) its only a short drive but the turning can be missed so slow down after you have passed the Seymour Pub as its coming up in approx 400m. From here follow the road past the Oyster Farm and past the large house called La Sente on the right and you are there.

If on foot or coming on the bus the number 1 bus route from St Helier bus station to Gorey runs several times an hour and can drop you on the coast road at La Rocque Pier and just walk up Rue du Pont opposite the northern slip, carry on past the church and just as you approach the left hand bend La Rue de La Sente Maillard will be on your right.
