Borsodi-Mezöség is the largest alkaline marshland complex on the right bank of the River Tisza.
In Borsodi-Mezöség the main wetland types, still preserved in good, natural conditions, are permanent and intermittent marshes, hayfields and wet meadows which form a mosaic vegetation pattern with arid vegetation habitats (such as steppe grasslands on loess and sandy soil). The site provides important staging habitats and water bodies for migratory birds including the (Ευρωπαϊκός) Γερανός, while a large number of threatened waterbirds nest there. But also top species like (Ανατολικός) Βασιλαετός, Στεπογέρακο, Μεγάλη Ωτίδα, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Χαλκοκουρούνα and (Ευρωπαϊκό) Μαυροκιρκίνεζο occur here.
Because of the large scale the area is best explored by car. Almost no tarmac in de park. After heavy rain it can be muddy on the dirt roads.
Borsodi-Mezoseg is also known as Little Hortobagy. But the area is still huge with its 30,000 hectares.
