Description

Wriakhörnsee is a freshwater lake nestled in the dunes on the southern point of the island of Amrum. Originally a lagoon-like coastal lake, Wriakhörnsee was transformed into a freshwater body in the 1970s after coastal protection measures cut off its connection to the sea. Today, it’s a vital breeding and resting site for seabirds, including (Κοινή) Πουπουλόπαπια, (Ευρωπαϊκός) Στρειδοφάγος, terns, and various gull species. The area around lake Wriakhörnsee is easily accessible via many different paths and it also offers good insights into the area. If you keep enough distance from the birds, you can enter the Kniepsandhaken - the vast sandbank on the south side of the lake - at all possible places and observe birds.
