Description
Especially in winter the bay of Wohlenberger Wiek is worth visiting with a high possibility to spot Σταχτόπαπια. The birds come into the bay when it is windy to seek protection from the wind. Then you can see up to 1000 Σταχτόπαπια and, with luck and patience, Χειμωνοβουτηχτάρι and Μαυροβουτηχτάρι. Sometimes you can also see divers, such as Λαμπροβούτι. On the way there, you should also keep an eye on the fields, as there is a chance to spot Hooded Crow, Αγριόκυκνος and maybe even Νανόκυκνος. For photographers this is not a very good place, because the birds are mostly up to 700m out at the sea.
In summer birds like Αμμοσφυριχτής, (Ευρασιατική) Τουρλίδα and Δεντροσπουργίτης can be observed. Χιονόπαπια, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Μαυρόπαπια, (Κοινή) Πουπουλόπαπια, Θαλασσοπρίστης and Βελουδόπαπια can be spotted too. Personally, I only visited the area in winter. Access
You can park close to Wohlenberger Wiek, just north of the village of Hohen Wieschendorf. Click on the P in the map for directions. From the parking it is about a 600 meter walk to get to the best viewpoint. It is also possible to get to the viewpoint by bike.
