The area of Windknollen offers a habitat which is similar to the North American prairie. Larks, buntings and birds of prey can be easily observed.
The area of Windknollen - close to the city of Jena - is a small mountain with a mosaic landscape containing mostly semi-dry short grass vegetation, temporarily water-filled depressions, bushes, mixed deciduous forest and isles of pine trees. Once a military training area it is now a little nature reserve (185 ha). Typical birds here are (Κοινή) Σιταρήθρα, Δεντροσταρήθρα, Τσιφτάς, Αετομάχος and Μαυρολαίμης. You can also easily find Χρυσοτσίχλονο, Σταχτής Δρυοκολάπτης , Ελατοπαπαδίτσα, Βραχοκιρκίνεζο (Κοινή) Γερακίνα and Ψαλιδιάρης.
You can access Windknollen only on foot from different directions, for example from the village of Closewitz or through Steingrund.
