Description

The Westruper Heide (Westrup Heath) is visually divided into 2 areas. Towards the Haltern reservoir, the landscape is wide and open. The slightly hilly landscape is dominated by broom heath, the rarer bell heath and sandy grassland. Further east there are juniper bushes. Even if you are not looking for birds, the Westruper Heide area is magnificent. The landscape is breathtakingly beautiful. It is easy to find birds like Μαυρολαίμης and Σταχτομυγοχάφτης. This is also a very nice place for butterflies and bees. There are numerous hiking trails.

Access

The Westruper Heide is located in the immediate vicinity of the Haltern reservoir. It can be reached by bicycle within a few minutes from the village of Haltern am See. There are many places to park for cars and bikes. Click on a P in the map to get directions to a parking.

Four signposted themed trails, each 3 to 4 kilometres long, lead to the Westrup Heath. Several information stations along the paths as well as large information signs at the entrances provide info on the fauna and flora of the area.

At the Seehof entrance, directly on the shore of the reservoir, are the starting and end points of a tactile path for visually impaired people. The approximately 2.9-kilometre-long route has a guidance system equipped on one side. Wheelchair-accessible paths with a total length of approximately 3 kilometres also start at the same location and at the north car park.
