The Wertachstaustufe is a dam on the river Wertach, between Augsburg and Bobingen. This has created a small lake that is home to many birds.
On the lake you can find different species of geese and ducks such as; Πρασινοκέφαλη Πάπια, Μαυροκέφαλη Πάπια, Σταχτόχηνα, (Κοινή) Φαλαρίδα and (Βουβός) Κύκνος. In spring and autumn you can also see resting migratory birds like Ασπρομέτωπη Χήνα, (Ευρωπαϊκό) Κιρκίρι, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Σαρσέλα and (Ευρωπαϊκό) Σφυριχτάρι. Along the shore of the river and the lake, and at the small biotope at the west side of the lake, you can also find forest birds like (Ευρωπαϊκός) Συκοφάγος, (Ευρωπαϊκός) Κούκος, Πευκοδρυοκολάπτης, (Μεγάλο) Καλαμοτσίχλονο and (Ευρωπαϊκή) Αλκυόνη.
By car: Wertachstausee is located 10 km south of Augsburg and 80 west of Munich, near the town of Bobingen. Take the B17 to the Königsbrunn Süd exit, then head west to Bobingen, and then to the Wertachklinik hospital.
There are two parking areas on Wertachstrasse, very close to each other. One is opposite the hospital, and one is directly at the river Wertach. Click on the P in the map to get directions. From there you can explore the lake by walking (or by cycling) the 4 km circular route around the lake (see the map).
By train: Take the train from Augsburg to Bobingen, and from there walk 2.6 km in the direction of the hospital.
