The Ruhlsee was used as a quarry pond as part of the construction of the A66 motorway and is located in the nature reserve Kinzigaue von Langenselbold.
The 135 hectare Ruhlsee area was renatured in 2009. A major project led by the HGON, among others. Shallow water zones and islands were created next to a ring trench, which is supposed to contribute to the water quality. These serve primarily as feeding and nesting habitats for waterfowl and ground-breeders both during the migration period and during the breeding season.
Parking spaces can be found either at the Kinzigsee beach or at the Baumschule Müller which has barrier closing times. Click on the P in the map to get directions.
The south bank was closed to visitors as a retreat and observation hides were built. The amount of species is considerable despite the sometimes high pressure on the area caused by leisure activities.
