Description
Gedenkstätte Stresow is a little memorial of World War II located in the Wendland in midst of a lot of nature. Right next to the memorial is a small lake, where you can often see Νανοπρίστης, Χηνοπρίστης and several species of duck in Winter.
A few hundred meters futher there is an observation tower with a nice view over the partially flooded meadows and small bodies of water. In winter they are getting used as a wintering and migration place for thousands of ducks and geese such as Ψαλίδα (του Βορά), (Ευρωπαϊκή) Βουκεφάλα, (Ευρωπαϊκό) Σφυριχτάρι, Καπακλής, (Ευρωπαϊκό) Κιρκίρι, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Σαρσέλα, (Ευρασιατική) Χουλιαρόπαπια, Γκισάρι, Μαυροκέφαλη Πάπια, Βαρβάρα, Barnacle Goose, Ασπρομέτωπη Χήνα, Χωραφόχηνα and Αγριόκυκνος. If you are lucky than you can spot a Διπλοκεφαλάς in the bushes.
During migration times many waders visit the area. You can observe (Ευρωπαϊκή) Καλημάνα, Λασποσκαλίδρα, Αμμοσφυριχτής, Ποταμοσφυριχτής, (Ευρασιατική) Τουρλίδα, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Λιμόζα, Ακτίτης, (Κοινό) Μπεκατσίνι, Λασπότρυγγας, Δασότρυγγας, Μαυρότρυγγας, Κοκκινοσκέλης, Πρασινοσκέλης and sometimes Μαχητής. On the water bodies you can sometimes spot grebes such as Κοκκινοβουτηχτάρι or (Κοκκινόλαιμο) Νανοβουτηχτάρι or see a (Ευρωπαϊκή) Αλκυόνη.
For a better look there is a route on the dike through the meadows so you can see the whole area from different sides. In the summer there are many swallows and (Ευρωπαϊκός) Γερανός , herons and Λευκός Πελαργός. Σταχτοτσικνιάς and Αργυροτσικνιάς are not uncommon, with a bit of luck you even can see a pair of Μαύρος Πελαργός.
From the power poles, the bushes and out of the reed you can hear the songs of (Μεγάλο) Καλαμοτσίχλονο, Τσιφτάς, Χρυσοτσίχλονο, Θαμνοτσιροβάκος, Σχοινοποταμίδα, Καλαμοποταμίδα, Τσιχλοποταμίδα, Καστανολαίμης, Μαυρολαίμης, (Κοινή) Σιταρήθρα and see for example Αετομάχος or Κιτρινοσουσουράδα.
Over the whole year you can spot many different birds of prey. From the observation tower you can see Καλαμόκιρκος flying over the reed beds, in the whole area (Κοινή) Γερακίνα, Ψαλιδιάρης and Βραχοκιρκίνεζο are not uncommon. On very good days you can even see a Πετρίτης or (Ευρωπαϊκός) Σφηκιάρης. Also often seen are Τσίφτης, Χειμωνόκιρκος and Ψαραετός and sometimes more down by the river Aland in the trees sit one or two (Ευρωπαϊκός) Θαλασσαετός.

Access
Feuchtwiesen Gedenkstätte Stresow is located east of the villages of Kapern and Gummern and north of the village of Aulosen. There are two roads to the memorial Stresow. One is a dirt road from Kapern, safer is the normal road from Aulosen. On the memorial is a parking space, where you can park your car. Press P on the map for directions to the parking. From there it is better to walk or to ride a bike. You can also easily connect the visit with a bike tour through the beautiful landscape of Wendland.
