Description
The wet meadows of Elzwiesen are irrigated in March, August and November. End of March/ start of April and August are the best times to watch migrating birds on the flooded meadows. Common migrating spiecies are Λασπότρυγγας , Μαχητής , Πρασινοσκέλης , Καστανοκέφαλος Γλάρος and (Ευρωπαϊκή) Σαρσέλα. Also rarer species like (Ευρασιατική) Χουλιαρομύτα , Σιγλίγουρος and (Ευρωπαϊκή) Λιμόζα can sometimes be found on the irrigated areas.
Breeding birds are (Ευρασιατική) Τουρλίδα , (Ευρωπαϊκή) Καλημάνα , (Κοινό) Αηδόνι and Αετομάχος. Many Αργυροτσικνιάς , Σταχτοτσικνιάς and Λευκός Πελαργός can be observed feeding in the area. The meadows are irrigated in steps from south to north. So most times only one part of the area is flooded. Note that the area has limited access from March to June.
