Description
Portimojärvi is one of the best bird lakes and one of the most valuable wetlands in the area. The lake is actually a regulated extension of the Tengeliöjoki River. Many birds breed in the area and Portimojärvi is also a valuable as a gathering area for waterfowl during migration as in the summer closing season. Among the breeding birds are (Ευρωπαϊκό) Σφυριχτάρι, Κοκκινοβουτηχτάρι, Χηνοπρίστης, Ψαλίδα (του Βορά), (Ευρασιατική) Χουλιαρόπαπια, Χιονογλάρονο, Καστανοκέφαλος Γλάρος, Νανόγλαρος, Μαυροκέφαλη Πάπια and Νανοπρίστης. Other birds you can encounter are Αγριόκυκνος, Χειμωνοβουτηχτάρι, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Βουκεφάλα, (Ευρωπαϊκός) Γερανός, Ακτίτης and Λασπότρυγγας. But many more, see the birdlist below. Best time for a visit is from half May until the start of autumn migration.
