It's amazing how many different birds you can see in such a relatively small and urban area.
The Bispeengen area previously constituted the innermost shallow area of Odense Fjord and is a nature area with a lake, wet meadows, ponds and reeds.
In the winter there are large flocks of (Ευρωπαϊκό) Σφυριχτάρι and (Ευρωπαϊκό) Κιρκίρι, but also many other ducks and many Σταχτόχηνα. In late March/early April there are many birders out here because then the Γαλαζολαίμης arrives and breed here. Later in April the Καλαμοποταμίδα, Βαλτοποταμίδα and Σχοινοποταμίδα also can be seen. Throughout the year you can often spot Μουστακαλής on sunny and windless days. Another not so common bird in Denmark that you can see is Ποταμοσφυριχτής. Many different waders have been observed sporadically in the area, along with Σταχτοτσικνιάςand Αργυροτσικνιάς. You can also often see birds of prey hunting in the area, e.g. Καλαμόκιρκος , (Κοινή) Γερακίνα and (Ευρωπαϊκός) Θαλασσαετός.
The ring road 2 around Odense crosses the southern part of the area (where the road is called “Odins Bro”). By driving north at the intersection Odins Bro/Otterupvej (route 162), you will immediately come to a parking space on the right. Press P on the map for directions to the parking. By walking north through the allotments, you will come to the meadow. It is also possible to park at Odense Rowing Club on Kanalvej, and from here walk on the cycle path out to the meadow.
You can walk the triangle route and will see most birds, if you have time you can walk the extended route through Munkemaen allotment garden. Here you will mostly see sparrows, tits, warblers and other small birds.
You can cycle here from Odense on cycle paths, and if you have the time and inclination you can continue along the Odense Canal to Klintebjerg and Lammesø, which are also good birding spots. However, you must be used to cycling and allow 2-3 hours extra.
