Description
Paklenica National Park is situated on the southern slopes of the Velebit mountain chain and contains two impressive canyons: Mala (Small) Paklenica and Velika (Big) Paklenica. The area is known for its extraordinary geomorphologic structures. It is a paradise for birds that inhabit rocky slopes and cliffs. This road we describe here is west of the main canyons and much more quiet. You also don't have to pay an entrance fee in this part of the park.
The hills, rocky outcrops and stony slopes along the road are very good for observing (Δυτικός) Βραχοτσοπανάκος. Sometimes they are close, but sometimes they are singing high on the rocks and a spotting scope can be handy. Other birds you can see along the winding road are Γαλαζοκότσυφας (many!), Μαυροτσιροβάκος, Μαυροφτέρι, Μελωδοτσιροβάκος, Κιτρινοκαλιακούδα, (Κοινός) Κόρακας, Φιδαετός and Κλειδωνάς.

In the first kilometer you will pass some beautiful viewpoints over the sea before the road heads inland. The road has many bends, but is in good condition and paved and if you drive calmly it is more than safe to drive. There are several parkings and places where you can make a stop.
