Description
The Abeek is a beautiful stream valley with forests, marshes, ponds and meadows. A lot of special animals and plants are present here. The Eek and Abeek streams feed the large pond complex De Luysen. This pond area is a paradise for birds. There are three fantastic bird hides (many birds to see and with comfortable seats and well-placed viewing openings). The most western bird hide Roerdomp is very good for observing (Ευρωπαϊκή) Αλκυόνη, (Ευρασιατικός) Ήταυρος and Δεντρογέρακο and if you are very lucky (Ευρωπαϊκός) Μικροτσικνιάς. Among the other breeding birds in the area are Καλαμοτριλιστής, (Ευρασιατική) Μπεκάτσα, (Κοινό) Μπεκατσίνι, (Ευρωπαϊκός) Συκοφάγος, (Ευρωπαϊκός) Κούκος, and Αετομάχος. The ponds are also a very good area for many species of dragonflies.
You can choose to only visit the 3 bird hides from the Mariahof parking, but you can also walk on and make a beautiful circular walk through the adjacent St-Maartensheide. This is an open landscape with scattered trees and bushes.

Nederlands: De Abeek is een prachtig beekdal met bossen, moerassen, vijvers en weilanden. De beken Eek en Abeek voeden het grote vijvercomplex Mariahof - De Luysen van 40 hectare. Dit vijvergebied is een paradijs voor vogels. Er zijn drie fantastische vogelkijkhutten (veel vogels te zien en met comfortabele banken en goed geplaatste kijkopeningen). De meest westelijke vogelkijkhut Roerdomp is heel goed voor het zien van (Ευρωπαϊκή) Αλκυόνη, (Ευρασιατικός) Ήταυρος en Δεντρογέρακο en als je veel geluk hebt zelfs (Ευρωπαϊκός) Μικροτσικνιάς. Tot de andere broedvogels in het gebied behoren Καλαμοτριλιστής, (Ευρασιατική) Μπεκάτσα, (Κοινό) Μπεκατσίνι, (Ευρωπαϊκός) Συκοφάγος, (Ευρωπαϊκός) Κούκος en Αετομάχος. De vijvers zijn ook een zeer goed voor vele soorten libellen.
Je kunt ervoor kiezen om vanaf de parkeerplaats Mariahof alleen de 3 vogelkijkhutten te bezoeken, maar je kunt ook doorlopen en een prachtige rondwandeling maken door het aangrenzende natuurgebied Sint-Maartensheide. Dit is een open landschap met verspreide bomen en struiken.

Access
De Luysen, Mariahof and Sint-Maartensheide are located on the border of Belgium and The Netherlands, east of the Belgian towns of Bocholt and Bree and south of the Dutch town of Weert. There is a parking lot at the end of the Mariahofstraat in Bree at the visitors centre. Click on the P in the map for directions. This parking is the closest one to the bird hides. But you can also park on the western side of the area at the Luysmolen (an old water mill and restaurant).
Trails are pointed out with different indications for each distance depending between 6,9 km and 10,2 km. The route you see on the map is 7,2 km. There are connections with other nature reserves in the area. The closest neighbor of De Luysen-Mariahof is nature reserve Smeetshof and on the Dutch side, nature reserve Wijffelterbroek and Kettingdijk (all these areas are described on Birdingplaces). You can combine the red Sint-Maartensheide walk with the orange and yellow Smeetshof walk into a day trip.

Er is een parkeerplaats aan het einde van de Mariahofstraat in Bree bij het bezoekerscentrum. Klik op de P op de kaart voor een routebeschrijving. Deze parkeerplaats ligt het dichtst bij de vogelkijkhutten. Maar je kunt ook aan de westkant van het gebied parkeren bij de Luysmolen (een oude watermolen en restaurant).
Er zijn routes aangegeven met verschillende aanduidingen voor elke afstand, variërend tussen 6,9 km en 10,2 km. De route die je op de kaart ziet is 7,2 km. Er zijn verbindingen met andere natuurgebieden in de omgeving. De dichtstbijzijnde buur van De Luysen-Mariahof is natuurgebied Smeetshof en aan de Nederlandse kant natuurgebieden Wijffelterbroek en Kettingdijk (al deze gebieden staan beschreven op Birdingplaces). Je kunt de rode Sint-Maartensheidewandeling combineren met de oranje en gele Smeetshofwandeling tot een dagvullende wandeling.
