Description

The Kleine Weikerlsee and the Große Weikerlsee are located in the Traun-Donau-Auen nature reserve, on the confluence of the rivers Donau and Traun. Along the banks of the lakes you will find birds typical of the region such as (Βουβός) Κύκνος, (Κοκκινόλαιμο) Νανοβουτηχτάρι, Σταχτόχηνα and Σκουφοβουτηχτάρι. The area is especially good in winter for overwintering ducks such as (Ευρασιατικό) Φερεντίνι, Γκισάρι, Μαυροκέφαλη Πάπια, (Ευρωπαϊκη) Βαλτόπαπια, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Βουκεφάλα and Χηνοπρίστης, but also Λαγγόνα, (Ευρωπαϊκή) Νεροκοτσέλα and Αργυροτσικνιάς can be observed.

Because the lakes are surrounded by forest you can also find many woodpeckers and other woodland birds. In the summer, when the area attracts many holidaymakers, far fewer birds can be seen.
