Mixed deciduous woodland set amongst a flowing landscape of farms, small fields and woods. The area is protected by the Gwent Ornithological Society.
The Gwent Ornithological Society has owned Goytre House Wood since 2001 and manages it as a reserve for birds and other wildlife. The 11-acre site is a mixed deciduous woodland consisting mainly of oak, beech, ash, sycamore and silver birch. In spring the woodland floor is carpeted with bluebells and wild daffodil are also present. Nesting birds are encouraged by the erection of nest boxes which are used by Blaumeise and Kohlmeise, Kleiber and, occasionally, Trauerschnäpper. Also Grauschnäpper is present every year with one or two pairs. Buntspecht and Grünspecht are nearly always present. Waldkauz breeds from time to time, Kolkrabe and Mäusebussard are seen and heard in the area and both Stockente and Teichhuhn use the pond.
Goytre House Wood lies more or less west of the village of Goytre (Penperlleni) which is located on the A4042 five miles south of Abergavenny and four miles north of Pontypool.
Access to the wood is at SO 318049 (Landranger Map 171). The nearest car park is opposite the Goytre Arms pub. Cross the main road and walk up the lane opposite (Park y Brain Lane) for about 500 meters to a way-marked kissing gate on your left. Pass through this and follow the path into the wood. When you get to the canal towpath turn right and after passing under the second bridge exit through the gate which takes you back on to the lane. The track can be muddy during the winter and after rain.
If you intend visiting the wood, please keep to the footpath, particular during the nesting season. Many of the nest boxes can be seen from the path and views of the wood can be obtained from the canal towpath. This will ensure that disturbance is kept to a minimum during the breeding season.
