Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park

Bangkok  >  Thailand

One of the best birding spots if you are in Bangkok. You just have to cross the Chao Praya river to be in a jungle-like park where the birding is good.

Beschreibung

Nakhon Khuean Khan Park and Botanical Garden, also known as Suan Bang Krachao, is located in the "Green lung of Bangkok". A green area in a loop of the Chao Praya river and completely surrounded by the city of Bangkok. Nakhon Khuean Khan is a public park that consists of some landscaped gardens next to a lake but at least half of the park is surprisingly wild and attracts a lot of birds, particularly in migratory periods. It has a great variety of plants and covers several interesting places, both inside and around of the park. There is a 7-meter high bird watching tower (with limited views, but you can get a glimpse of some canopy birds) and there are many trails to explore the area. A great place for a morning of birding.

Resident birds are, for example, Indian Roller, White-throated Kingfisher, Coppersmith Barbet, Rufous Woodpecker, Orange-breasted Green Pigeon, etc. Migratory birds visiting during the winter season, are, for example, Peregrine Falcon, Asian Paradise-Flycatcher, Blue-winged Pitta and Ashy Drongo. The area is also good to see some bird species which are fairly scarce in Thailand like Vinous-breasted Starling, Pink-necked Green-Pigeon and Stork-billed Kingfisher.

Zugang

Although Sri Nakorn Kuen Khan park is close to Bangkok it is usually very quiet with people, especially early in the morning. You can reach the park by a small road, but a good and shorter option from Bangkok is to take the ferry at the Wat Khlong Toei Nok pier (marked with a star on the map) and cross the Chao Praya river there. When you arrive on the other side of the river there is bicycle rental company on the pier. So you can choose if you want to cycle or walk. From the pier it is an easy 1 km walk to the park. Entrance to the park is free and you can choose from many trails to explore the park.
