This island of the Swedish east coast is heavily visited by birds during migration.
Björns Skärgård is a popular breeding spot for many shore birds. The largest colony of Raubseeschwalbe in Sweden can be found here. The best time to visit is during migration in both spring and autumn as many birds pass by the island. Some of these species are otherwise difficult to observe from the mainland as they migrate far out at sea like Sterntaucher, Schmarotzerraubmöwe, Trottellumme and Dreizehenmöwe. Many small birds use the island as a resting place. Interesting findings during migration include Rotkehlpieper and Gelbbrauen-Laubsänger. During optimal weather conditions large quantities of geese and ducks will come close to the island like Ringelgans and Spießente. The rocky shores provide natural observation platforms all around the island.
Note that this birders paradise is located on an island and is only accessible by boat, and no regular boat traffic goes to or from the island. So having your own boat or knowing someone who owns a boat is useful, see also the information further below. The best place to depart is from Fågelsundet. A small dock where you can leave your boat is present on the island. The island itself can be explored on foot, and toilets as well as sleeping arrangement are provided, the latter comes with a fee and must be booked in advance. Certain parts of the island and the surrounding area are prohibited from entering during spring and summer in order to not distrub any nesting birds.
Boat transport is offered on request, click on the Naturkartan-link below for more information (as well as about the sleeping arrangement), note that the information is in Swedish!
